After running a decade long insurgency, the once underground guerilla organization, the Communist Party of Nepal, popularly know as the Maoists, are forming the new government in Nepal. They have promised land reform and other programs to stimulate growth and productivity, and Nepalese population is waiting for change. However, new government also faces the task of integrating more than 19,000 former guerrillas housed in 28 UN-supervised camps and bringing the army, traditionally seen loyal to the now-abolished monarchy, under civilian control. Federalism: Dreams and Realities of Inclusive Nepal

Nepal was long ruled by a small number of men from elite families. This created a social disparity along gender, caste, ethnicity, cultural, and geographic lines. Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) was able to successfully use the ethnic, regional, caste, and gender based grievances and militancy into advancing a political movement. Today, Nepal's constituent assembly is highly inclusive of previously marginalized groups. However, achieving inclusion in all aspects of socio-economic scene remains to be a long process that goes well into the future. We invite you to come and interact with a leader of the Maoist political movement on is issues of federalism and inclusion.

CFFN organized its second annual event Himalayan Heartbeat - a cultural night showcasing Nepalese performing arts. Attended by invited guests, NGO representatives, mountaineers, and the public, the featured guest of the rpogram was Honourable Marion Dewar, former Mayor of Ottawa. CFFN honoured Meagan McGrath, a Canadian aerospace engineer, a renowned mountaineer, and the youngest Canadian woman to successfully climb the Seven Summits of the world, who scaled the summit of the Mt. Everest in May 2007.

NCAO Multicultural Event Makes a Mark in Ottawa

Nepalese Canadian Association of Ottawa (NCAO, www.nepalese.ca) organized a spectacular multicultural show with a fanfare and success on an open-air theatre in picturesque Andrew Hayden Park in Ottawa. The highlight of the program was a superbly prepared cultural show for three hours. The event raised more than $9,000 in donations of which all the proceeds is to be given to a charity organization, the Ottawa Food Bank.

This interaction program was organized on ongoing ethnic and constitutional issues of Nepal on 11 February 2007 in Ottawa as Mr Gopal Siwakoti, a Professor of Law at Tribhuvan University and General Secretary of Joint Forum for Human Rights will be our guest speaker and panalist. After a serious discussion, the participants converge to the conclusion that a constitution assembly must be inclusive of all sectors of society if the constitution made by such body is to win the hearts and minds of the people. Formulating a new constitution for a country is a special event in history and all sectors of the society should allow be participants of this process.

A meeting of the general members was held in Ottawa Citizen Hall, Ottawa on January 27, 2007. The executives elaborated the By-laws, board composition, election process, meeting procedures, and the processes the current executive went through while registering the organization to Industry Canada. There was general consensus that education sector is in need of help and might be the most important issue for Nepal. However, there were cautious notes from the members on whether CFFN will have perennial source or resources to support long lasting projects.

Canada Forum for Nepal organized "Himalayan Heartbeat: Nepal Cultural Evening" a multifaceted introduction of Nepal. Renowned Canadian mountaineer Andrew Brash gave a presentation stunning images and amazing stories from his own trip to the Mount Everest. Nepal Specialist Richard Harmston spoke on recent developments in Nepal. Nepalese youth artists presented dances in the program, which spellbound the audience and a movie “Ujeli: A Child Bride in Nepal” produced by UNICEF was also screened. The movie was so touching that many in the audience were in tears. There was a spectacular display of Nepalese arts and crafts, which were also for sale in the Nepali bazaar.

Relief Fund for Victims in Nepal - April 16, 2006
Ordinary Nepalese people are injured and killed in a daily basis while protesting against the government. As the number of victims is increasing rapidly, Nepalese civil society has appealed for the Nepalese Diaspora and international community to help treat the victims. CFFN collected (and is still collecting) contributions to be transferred to Janandolan Primary Health Treatment Fund. On CFFN campaign of April 17, concerned friends contributed Cdn$2768 to the fund.

An eight member Ad-hoc Committee of CFFN was formed on 26 February 2006 comprising of Alys Muckart, Bishwa Adhikari, Faruq Faisel, Kalidas Subedi, Krishnahari Gautam, Pradeep Sharma, Pramod Dhakal and Ram Acharya. The committee will execute CFFN’s activities until the organization is broadened, membership is expanded, and an election of full fledged executive committee is carried out.

Four guest speakers highlighted social, political and economic factors that are contributing to the current crisis in Nepal. As a chief guest, Hon. Flora MacDonald, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada, expressed that Nepal is on the verge of being a failing state. She was critical of the government decision for not reciprocating the four-month long Maoists ceasefire. She raised concern about the difficulties that the ordinary people are facing in their daily life following the coup by the King using his military power. Read Press Release

CHUO 89.1 FM Radio Ottawa invited Pramod Dhakal, a CFFN committee member, for an interview on media and human rights issues in Nepal. In the interview, Mr. Dhakal criticized the suppressive approaches of the regime and stressed that the 12-point memorandum-of-understanding (MOU) signed by seven parties and the Maoists in Nepal was a positive step. He added that king must respect the spirit of the MOU and permit the people to bring a democratic constitution through an election of a constitutional assembly, a most desired way to prevent further death and catastrophe in Nepal.

The petition was also posted on-line by the Kantipur Publication, a leading daily newspaper in Nepal. The petition stresses that the 12-point MOU signed by seven major parliamentary parties and Nepal Communist Party (Maoist) is a ray of hope and signatories should utilize this achievement to move forward. The document also appeals to the international communities to use their collective influence on King Gyanendra to put country in the path of peace, democracy and economic stability. Three hundred forty-eight people from different parts of the world signed the petition. CFFN expresses its gratitude to the people who have shown their solidarity by signing in the petition.
