Press Release

September 28, 2008
Ottawa Canada: Canada Forum for Nepal is providing $1001 in response to exceptional flood experienced in Koshi River and subsequent loss of lives, property, and massive displacement experienced in Eastern Tarai in Nepal. Unusually heavy rain raised Koshi River beyond the embankments made by Koshi project and the river chose to take a new course sweeping a vast swath of land in Nepal and India. It has been reported that approximately 42,807 Nepalese people are affected by the Koshi floods in Sunsari and Saptari Districts on 18 August 2008, in addition to an estimated 11,000 Indian nationals, according to the Government of Nepal assessment.

The money will be provided for this specific humanitarian cause to a larger pool of Prime Minister's Disaster Relief Fund to be passed through NRN-Canada and then through NRNA. This is earmarked for emergency relief commodities and the provision of safe drinking water for those in need.

Subsequet Press Release of NRN-Canada

22 October 2008

NRN – Canada has successfully raised more $ 10,000 for the Koshi Flood victims in Nepal to contribute funds to support relief efforts for the people affected by the recent flooding in Nepal.

The donation drive was initiated at the First National Convention of NRN- Canada by Mr. Aditya Jha, a prominent businessman. At the conference, he committed a contribution NRs.350,000 (approx. CDN $ 5000) for the Koshi Flood Victims under the banner of NRN-Canada

Drawing from the inspiration, a fundraiser musical event, “Ani Choying’s concert in Toronto” was organised by NRN- Canada and the Nepalese Canadian Janajati Association on Friday, Aug 29, 2008. With only a week to plan and organize the event, the concert raised an impressive sum of $2,430.

With the total fund of more than CDN $ 7,500, NRN-Canada set a goal of raising $2500 more to bring the fund to $10,000. A donation drive was initiated Canada-wide from September 10, 2008 to September 30, 2008. Within 20 days $2,633 was raised. NRN-Canada would like to express its special gratitude to Canada Forum for Nepal, Ottawa for contributing CDN $1,001. An additional fund of $1,632 was collected from Non residential Nepalis living in Canada and friends of Nepal.

In the three phases, NRN- Canada, in collaboration with the abovementioned Nepalese Associations, successfully raised more than $10, 000 for the Koshi Flood victims in Nepal. Funds ($2430) raised at Ani Choying’s Concert has been sent to Prime Minister’s Relief Fund in Nepal by co-organizer Nepalese Canadian Janajati Association.

Funds raised from the donation drive, $2603 (excluding $30 transfer fee) has been transferred to NRNA Special fund account by NRN-Canada. The NRNA will eventually transfer the funds to the Prime Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund in Nepal.

Both the above funds will be used to support relief efforts for the people affected by the recent flooding in Southern Nepal; while the contribution from Mr. Jha aims to rehabilitate educational opportunities for the displaced children.

NRN – Canada would like to thank all the organizations and individuals who have generously contributed to help the Koshi flood survivors in Nepal.
